Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Rita Lan Fan Yip ("RLFY") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

RLFY : I am a GIA certified gemologist with over 40 years of professional experience in art jewelry design. My creations perfectly integrate Eastern and Western culture and aesthetics.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

RLFY : A strong sense of achievement motivates my designs. I feel immense joy when people appreciate my creations. I believe this creative talent is a gift from the universe, and I am truly passionate about what I do. That is why, even in my sixties, I have no desire to retire at all.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

RLFY : I chose this path entirely on my own. It feels like I was born for this. Even as a very young child, I loved stringing beads and making my own little bracelets, even with simple plastic beads. Design has always been my true passion, never something I was forced into.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

RLFY : I design art jewelry that blends Eastern and Western aesthetics, rooted in my background as a GIA-certified gemologist. Moving forward, I want to create more of this culturally fused art jewelry, so that more people can experience and embrace this cross-cultural vision through my work.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

RLFY : They should stay hungry to learn, and never stop honing their craft. Most importantly, they must create from their own true passion, never copying others. Stay humble, keep their hearts open, and let their genuine love for design guide their work. Great things always grow from that pure, inner devotion.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

RLFY : A good designer creates beautiful pieces that resonate with most people, crafting works that many can love and appreciate. But a truly great designer is unbound by convention. They see the impossible as possible, dare to break every boundary others hesitate to cross, even if the world calls them unconventional or even crazy. They are like messengers of the divine, sent to rewrite the rules and bring new visions into the world.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

RLFY : A truly good design must be original and should not copy others’ creations. It should not be overly exaggerated or overly conceptual. Some pieces are only made for competitions; they are too extreme to be worn in public at all. For me, practicality is essential. A fine design should at least be wearable enough to be worn out for occasions, instead of being something you can only keep for show.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

RLFY : The core value of great design lies in aesthetics. All human beings love and pursue beauty in life. We should invest time in good design, for it shapes our taste and makes our whole life warmer, nicer and far more beautiful.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

RLFY : If I had enough time, I would craft a series of soulful jewelry embedded with unique life stories and sincere eternal love. I design for every person, men and women equally, who cherish emotional warmth and spiritual beauty. I hope my creations can deeply touch people’s hearts, carry precious lifelong memories, and pass down gentle love forever.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

RLFY : My dream project is to redefine the true meaning of jewelry. I believe jewelry is never meant only for the wealthy. Every design I create is born out of love. We give jewelry to someone because we truly love and cherish them. It holds beautiful memories and precious feelings deep inside. Even if time goes by, or someone is no longer with us, the jewelry remains as a timeless keepsake, preserving all the love and wonderful memories forever. I hope to dedicate my professional skills to voluntary and charitable work. I wish to design meaningful jewelry for people with touching life stories, to turn their deepest love and precious moments into eternal treasures. This is my heartfelt dream that I hope to fulfill one day.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

RLFY : My secret ingredient is heartfelt care. I don’t just design jewelry; I design for the love and memories each piece will carry

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

RLFY : My biggest inspiration comes from Wallace Chan (陳世英). As a Chinese jewelry legend, his poetic craftsmanship and boundary-breaking designs have always amazed me.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

RLFY : I am inspired by Wallace Chan. His work is incredibly creative and pushes the boundaries of jewelry craftsmanship

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

RLFY : My greatest design is a piece I made for someone special. It was created with love, and every detail holds a precious memory, making it truly unique.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

RLFY : People can improve by never stopping learning and observing the world around them. For me, I kept practicing, learning new skills, and always put my heart into every design.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

RLFY : If I hadn’t become a designer, I would have been something related to art or beauty

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

RLFY : To me, design is not just about beauty. It is about creating something that holds love and meaning for the person who wears it.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

RLFY : I am my own biggest supporter. For decades, I have stayed true to my passion and never given up on my dreams

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

RLFY : What helped me become a great designer is my refusal to give up and my unwavering commitment to my original intention.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

RLFY : There were many obstacles along the way, but because I love what I do, I was happy to overcome every single one of them.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

RLFY : Designers should present their work with honesty, passion, and the story behind each piece. It is not just about showing beauty, but also about sharing the meaning and emotion that make the work unique.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

RLFY : I will continue to create jewelry that carries love and meaning. You can expect more heartfelt pieces that blend classic craft with modern beauty, always staying true to my original intention.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

RLFY : My ultimate goal is to create timeless jewelry that connects with people’s hearts, bringing them warmth and meaning for a lifetime.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

RLFY : People can expect sincerity, passion, and pieces that are made with heart, not just skill. They expect designs that are not only beautiful, but also carry lasting meaning.No

DL: How does design help create a better society?

RLFY : Design can bring beauty and warmth into people’s lives, reminding them of love and meaning. It connects people through shared emotion, making the world a more heartfelt and human place.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

RLFY : I am working on a new jewelry collection that blends classic craftsmanship with modern elegance, designed to carry personal stories and emotions for the wearer.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

RLFY : The project that has given me the most satisfaction is my Bodhi Leaf Collection—and it began with a heartbreak I still remember vividly. I created this piece for a client who initially loved the concept. But this wasn’t just any commission for me. I poured so much more than just design work into it. I tailored every single detail to their five elements, crafting a piece that I truly believed would bring them balance, harmony, and good fortune. I barely charged them for my design work, too. This was never about money. I just wanted to give them something made with genuine care, something that could be a quiet, meaningful blessing in their life. When the piece was finished, though, they told me they “didn’t like it anymore.” It wasn’t the design that had changed. It was the final cost of the craftsmanship—hand-set stones, rare materials, the hours of hand-finishing work—that exceeded their expectations. And suddenly, the piece they once loved felt like a burden. I was devastated. My pride as a designer took a real blow. For over 40 years, my work has always been about connection and intention, and to have a piece I’d poured my heart into dismissed, not for the art itself, but because of the numbers? It stung. I couldn’t help but question if my work, my care, my vision, was truly seen. That hurt, though, became my fuel. I decided to enter this exact piece into the A' Design Award—not for the trophy, but to prove something to myself: that my work has inherent value, that the intention and craft I pour into each piece is worthy of standing on a global stage. When I received the Silver Award, it was more than just validation. It felt like the world was saying, “We see what you did here. We see the heart in it.” This project didn’t just give me satisfaction. It gave me back my confidence. It taught me that my worth as a designer isn’t defined by one client’s budget or fleeting opinion. It’s defined by the love, the intention, and the integrity I bring to every single piece I create.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

RLFY : I would love to see more truly creative, original, and lively works in the design world. I’m tired of so many designs that look the same, dull and repetitive. I hope more designers dare to create from the heart, with their own soul and imagination—not just follow trends or copy others. Design should be alive, full of personality and spirit. I wish the industry would value genuine creativity more. Let us see works that are fresh, inspiring, and full of artistic feeling—not flat, boring, or made just for profit. For me, design is about passion, beauty, and meaning. I hope in the coming year, we can see more heartfelt, unique, and unforgettable creations.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

RLFY : I believe the design field is moving toward more meaningful, soul-driven creations. We’ve seen so much fast, mass-produced, trend-chasing design, but I think people are starting to crave something deeper. They want pieces that carry a story, intention, and genuine connection—not just something that looks good for a season. For jewelry especially, I see a shift back to handcraft, originality, and emotional resonance. People are tired of seeing the same designs everywhere. They want something unique, made with care, that feels personal and alive. Design is no longer just about aesthetics. It’s about purpose, heart, and the energy a creator pours into their work. The future belongs to those who dare to be different, who create from the soul, and who make pieces that truly matter.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

RLFY : It really depends on the inspiration. When the idea flows easily, the design can come together pretty quickly. But when I don’t feel the right energy for it, I won’t rush it. I’ll take more time to refine details, choose materials carefully, and let the design settle until it feels just right. I don’t believe in forcing a design just to meet a timeline. It takes as long as it takes to feel right—whether that’s a few days or a few weeks.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

RLFY : I start by communicating with the client first. I listen to their needs, the stories or emotions they want the jewelry to carry, and their style preferences. Only after understanding them fully do I move on to sketches and design details.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

RLFY : My motto is: Listen with heart, create with love.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

RLFY : I believe good original design sets the trends. Real creation leads fashion, instead of simply following it.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

RLFY : Technology is a helpful tool for me, but I do not rely on it. I depend on my own inspiration and I mostly design by hand sketching.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

RLFY : I don't use any design software or advanced equipment. I only rely on my own inspiration, and create designs with simple pens and paper for hand sketching

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

RLFY : Color and materials are very important in my design. Color expresses emotion, materials give life to the work, and ambient helps me better imagine the wearing effect.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

RLFY : I wish people would ask me why I designed this piece, and the story behind my creation.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

RLFY : I admire and learn from excellent designs by others. I take inspiration from them, while still keeping my own original creative style.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

RLFY : I believe in co-design, but only with someone who has a spiritual connection and similar artistic vibe. Only when our soul and aesthetic level match perfectly can we create great works together.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

RLFY : The clients I have worked with have had the greatest influence on my design. Every client’s unique story, emotions, and needs inspire me to create jewelry that carries their memories and feelings. They make my designs more personal and heartfelt.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

RLFY : nstead of books, I draw most of my inspiration from museums, exhibitions, sculptures, architecture, and everyday objects. Short texts and visual experiences have influenced my design more than formal books.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

RLFY : My skills as a designer have been shaped by over 40 years of unwavering practice, every client’s unique story, and the constant pursuit of heartfelt creation. Each piece I make teaches me to see beauty and emotion more deeply, refining my craft one design at a time.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

RLFY : If I could meet anyone, it would be the pioneering jewelry designers and master craftsmen who redefined the art of jewelry. I would love to learn about their vision, their passion, and how they brought their creative visions to life.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

RLFY : I feel deeply grateful for every award and recognition I’ve received. They are not just honors, but also a warm affirmation of my over 40 years of dedication to jewelry design, and a recognition of the stories and emotions I put into each piece. As for whether it’s hard to be famous, I would say yes. True fame doesn’t come overnight. It requires years of unwavering practice, constant refinement of craft, and staying true to your creative heart. What matters most to me is not fame, but the trust of my clients and my passion for jewelry design.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

RLFY : My favorite colors are white, black, blue, grey, gold and khaki. My favorite places are museums, art galleries and quiet nature spaces. I love peaceful places with artistic ambiance, and nature brings me great creative inspiration. I enjoy authentic local fine cuisine from different regions, and I prefer natural organic food that brings positive energy. My favorite season is autumn. I am fond of antiques and cultural relics with historical and artistic depth. I do not favor any modern commercial brands, as I am more attracted to antique pieces with cultural value and inner soul.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

RLFY : A warm little memoir that has stayed with me is when I finished a custom piece for a client. When he first saw it, he said, “This design feels like it has a light inside it—it seems to have a spirit, like it’s glowing.” I smiled at his words, but I was deeply touched. That moment reminded me: the jewelry we create isn’t just stones and metal; it carries intention, care, and energy—and sometimes, that is exactly what people feel when they hold it.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

RLFY : What makes my day great is the quiet, focused moments of creation, and the feeling that my work carries positive energy and meaning for the people who wear it. To motivate myself, I remind myself that every piece I make is not just jewelry—it is a vessel for intention, care, and connection, and that purpose keeps me inspired to keep creating with heart.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

RLFY : Looking back, it feels as if I was born to create. Even as a small child, I would sit quietly for hours, threading plastic beads into my own bracelets and necklaces, completely lost in the joy of designing something new. Back then, I didn’t know I would grow into a jewelry designer, but that innate passion for creating beauty with my hands was already deeply rooted in me.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

RLFY : I think the world will keep changing very fast. With the rapid development of AI and technology, life styles and people’s needs will be totally different. Maybe in a thousand years, people may no longer need to wear physical jewelry, and traditional designers might no longer be needed. Everything will transform along with the times.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

RLFY : For me, art is the most tender language of the soul. I am born with a natural devotion to artistic beauty, and I pour all my heart into every original creation. I truly hope everyone can understand that every piece of my design is made with sincere love and gentle energy. My works are never merely decorations; they carry my inner affection, heartfelt blessings and quiet spiritual power. I always respect the essence of art, insist on original creation, and use my lifetime persistence to convey warmth, love and positive energy to every soul who appreciates art and beauty.
