LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Saman Sabbaghi ("SS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SS : I am a graduate of both the bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial design. In my early 20s, I was studying mechanical engineering when I realized that the world around us needed more than just function, action, and reaction, and that there was an undeniable missing link in the chain of sociological elements. This is how I became interested in the concepts of aesthetics and sensory effects in product creation.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SS : In a word, the concept of simplicity. This word created a significant change in my worldview. How can one take steps towards establishing balance and equilibrium towards the mental peace of the observer in a world that is constantly shedding and creating deeper and more complex layers of information. In a word, the concept of simplicity. This word created a significant change in my worldview. How can one take steps towards establishing balance and equilibrium towards the observer's mental peace in a world that is constantly shedding and creating deeper and more complex layers of information? And what will be the role of cognitive elements in the philosophy of minimalism.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

SS : As an overthinker, When I think about the meaning of the word "Design", which means to contemplate "Based on Designo", I come to the conclusion that I was probably born a designer!

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SS : Thank you for asking this question. I see three areas to dive into: combining sustainable design with biotechnology + interactive design with AI capabilities + service design with new financial markets.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

SS : Don't be judgmental...be observant.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

SS : A good designer follows trends and creates significant financial results for the employer. But a great designer changes the way people live in society and takes a step towards alleviating the historical suffering of humanity.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

SS : Minimalism. Not just in form and aesthetics, but in all dimensions of existence.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

SS : Because it is the bridge between human cognitive evolution and the speed of society's acceptance of changes.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

SS : I am currently interested in developing collaborations with talented teams in the field of new financial technologies.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

SS : It's called Bitrium. A megaproject in the field of simulating human financial transactions in a decentralized manner using artificial intelligence and quantum processing.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

SS : Less is more.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

SS : Adolf Loos

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

SS : It's funny, but the Ligne Roset Togo Pouf is one of my all time signature creations!

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

SS : I think the self-driving container concept design, that I did for NASA was one of my most interesting projects.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

SS : Don't be judgmental...be observant!

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

SS : Maybe a fantastic Businessman!

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

SS : Deep thinking.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

SS : Curiosity.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

SS : Getting to know the latest engineering analysis/design softwares along with studying sociology/cognitive research in order to know human interactions can be a daunting process.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

SS : In the simplest way and with the greatest benefit from combined capabilities with artificial intelligence.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

SS : Combining service/application design and (physical) product design in the FinTech field.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

SS : The restoration of suffering mankind in loveliest way!

DL: How does design help create a better society?

SS : Easier digestion of the unknown!

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

SS : Numerous projects that will soon surprise the audience.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

SS : Big projects for big names such as NASA (Self-driving container) and TESLA (Cyber-H).

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

SS : Products that were very expensive and unprofitable to produce, can be made available to the public and commercialized in an efficient manner.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

SS : Maximum outsourcing using artificial intelligence.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

SS : Today, new technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced 3D printing have multiplied the speed of project completion.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

SS : In my mind's parallel world!

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

SS : Less is more!

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

SS : Are you kidding?!!

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

SS : Latest tools of Ai + Solidworks and Keyshot along with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

SS : In a way, it complements the function of new technologies in design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

SS : When will this guy introduce his next product?!

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

SS : What a great honor to have had such a magnificent experience at this historic moment.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

SS : I'm always loyal to visionary teams.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

SS : Definitely my university professor at the graduate level, Mr. Ali Faraji.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

SS : Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind + Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow (All written by Yuval Noah Harari)

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

SS : Nature as the world's leading multidisciplinary science journal has a powerful role in my life as a designer and keeps me updated and also excited for new fields.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

SS : Jack Dorsey, Ridley Scott, ...

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

SS : At first, it feels exciting, but as I move forward, the concept of (self) fades and I pay less attention to labels. Human progress in solving global problems feels more alive to me.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

SS : Black + White, Mountain, Winter and Moncler!

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?
