LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Nishit Gupta ("NG") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

NG : I hold a B.S. in Product Design with honors from ArtCenter College of Design, supplemented by study at MIT Institute of Design, INSEAD’s IBD program, and a certificate in Creative AI from Pratt Institute.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

NG : I became a designer to blend creativity with empathy—solving real human problems through tangible products.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

NG : It was a deliberate choice—I’ve been sketching since age six and knew early that design was my path.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

NG : I focus on industrial and UX-driven product design, recently beverage dispensers for Coca-Cola and bath/kitchen fixtures for Kohler, and I’d love to explore more sustainable consumer electronics.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

NG : Embrace user research, iterate rapidly, stay curious, and build a strong foundational skillset.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

NG : A great designer pairs strong craft with empathy, understanding both user needs and business goals.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

NG : I look for clarity of purpose, intuitive use, and seamless integration into users’ lives.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

NG : It saves time, reduces frustration, and creates emotional connections, fueling brand loyalty and real ROI.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

NG : I’d design accessible medical devices for underserved communities, combining empathy with technical rigor.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

NG : A fully modular, easily repairable consumer device that promotes a circular economy.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

NG : Empathy-driven research plus a “fail-fast” prototyping mindset.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

NG : Designers like Yves Béhar, Jony Ive, who merge simplicity with deep insight.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

NG : A futuristic space companion robot I designed in my Senior year of Design college.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

NG : I read widely, seek feedback rigorously, and practice side projects to sharpen my skills.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

NG : Maybe something related to sports and wellness, ideally, a professional athlete.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

NG : Design is the translation of human need into functional, beautiful, and sustainable solutions.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

NG : My family of engineers and designers, who nurtured my doodles from childhood.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

NG : Consistent curiosity, formal training, and diverse project experiences across industries.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

NG : They should tell user-centered stories supported by sketches, prototypes, and real feedback data.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

NG : Scaling Coca-Cola’s fountain dispenser platform globally with AI-driven personalization.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

NG : To leave a legacy of products that enrich daily life and push sustainable innovation.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

NG : Thoughtful insights, collaborative spirit, and maintaining design integrity.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

NG : Good design improves accessibility, efficiency, and environmental impact, making life better for everyone.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

NG : An AI-powered dispenser concept that adapts drink recipes in real time.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

NG : Greater emphasis on circular design, modularity, and product longevity.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

NG : Convergence of AI, IoT, and sustainable materials driving hyper-personalized experiences.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

NG : Depends on the design brief.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

NG : I start with ethnographic research, immersing in users’ environments to uncover latent needs.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

NG : Designers shape trends by interpreting societal shifts; trends then inform design priorities.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

NG : It’s a tool, enabling new form factors and interactions but always subordinate to user needs.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

NG : SolidWorks, KeyShot, Adobe Creative Suite, Fusion 360, SketchUp, and Unreal Engine.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

NG : They set the tone and functionality, materials impact sustainability, and color guides emotion and brand language.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

NG : “How did you uncover that user insight?” and “What trade-offs did you consider?”

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

NG : What user problem does this solve, and how could it be improved?

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

NG : A curious engineer or UX researcher, I believe in collaborative co-design.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

NG : Continuous learning and keeping a growth mindset.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

NG : I’d discuss design philosophy with Dieter Rams to learn from his “less, but better” ethos.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

NG : I’m honored, but stay grounded, recognition is a byproduct of genuine problem-solving, not a goal.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

NG : I don't know about great, but I’d sketch product ideas in class instead of taking notes.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

NG : I’m always learning - my design is a journey shaped by curiosity, collaboration, and a desire to make everyday life just a bit better.
